The rites of Umrah

Four steps, in brief

A brief overview for reference. Your religious guide will lead and explain each rite.

  1. 1

    Ihram

Before passing the miqat, pilgrims enter the sacred state of ihram with the intention for Umrah. Men wear the two plain white garments; women wear modest everyday clothing. The Talbiyah is recited from this point.

  2. 2

    Tawaf

On arriving at Masjid al-Haram, pilgrims perform seven circuits around the Kaaba, beginning at the Black Stone, followed by two units of prayer.

  3. 3

    Sa’i

Pilgrims walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, remembering the search of Hajar for water for her son Isma’il.

  4. 4

    Halq or Taqsir

Men shave or shorten their hair and women trim a small amount. This completes the Umrah and releases the pilgrim from ihram.

Ask your religious guide to explain the rites and answer questions before you travel.
